Malvar LGU receives 2016 SGLG Award

The Municipality of Malvar is one of the recipients of the 2016 Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) among the 306 provinces, cities and municipalities in the Philippines. The 2016 SGLG awarding ceremony coincided with the 2016 Philippine Local Governance Congress on October 27, 2016 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City. Mayor Cristeta Cuevas-Reyes received the SGLG Award from DILG Secretary Ismael Sueno, DILG OIC-Regional Director Manuel Gotis and Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara. Witnessing the event from Malvar LGU were Vice-Mayor Alberto Lat, MLGOO Gloria Paz Olave-Toledo and Secretary to the Mayor, Rey Latayan Villegas.

Among the 306 SGLG recipients, only five local government units are from the Province of Batangas. These are the (1) Province of Batangas; (2) Batangas City; (3) Municipality of Malvar; (4) Municipality of San Jose; and the (5) Municipality of Taal.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), in partnership with the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) convened the said congress with the theme, LGC@25: Pagsulong, Progreso, Pagbabago to celebrate accomplishments in the 25-year journey of local governance, and to continue this journey of decentralization and local autonomy under a federalism context. This one-day celebration sought to build awareness on the gains and challenges of the LGC and served as an avenue to present future directions towards deepening and strengthening local autonomy.

In this event, the main actors in the passage of this Code such as former Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel were recognized; twelve Outstanding Lupong Tagapamayapa for 2015 for their remarkable practice as indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms in the barangays were awarded; and 2016 Seal of Good Local Governance to 306 provinces, cities and municipalities for the notable performance and service delivery set across several areas were conferred.- REY LATAYAN VILLEGAS
